Bakery &
Bookstore
This project, a mixed-use facility consisting of a bakery, a bookstore, and a residence apartment, is located in downtown Muncie, Indiana. Using the design language of uncanny with the design operations of the familiar and unfamiliar, this building brings a unique feature to the declining art community in this town. After researching what was missing within the downtown area, the client decided to create a relaxing setting that allowed the community to escape from their hectic lives. This allowed for the creation of a local bakery to contrast the encroaching fast food ones and a cozy bookstore to allow local Ball State students a chance to read for pleasure outside of their classes. While some may think this extravagant building has no place in downtown Muncie, others argue that this may be the key to restoring Muncie's declining art community and force the city to thrive in unexpected, yet beneficial ways.
